Mary of Denmark, first state banquet as queen
Frederick and Mary of Denmark proposed to Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir and her husband Björn Skúla at a glittering gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle on Tuesday, October 8. Even though the Queen has just returned from her trip to Brazil, she took care of this special evening down to the smallest detail and it went perfectly.
After having enchanted with her purple look, entering the Palace for the gala, Mary attracted everyone’s attention with her look, but also with her allure. The sovereign she arrived on the arm of her husband Federicosmiling and charming as ever. No one expected to see the august couple in such a state of grace.
As is known, the last few months have been difficult for the Danish monarchs due to the rather well-founded rumors that betrayal of Frederick with Genoveva Casanova. The after-effects of this embarrassing situation weighed heavily on the Court, but peace finally seemed to have returned between the King and his wife. It would have been difficult to fake it so well at the reception at the Palace.
Marie of Denmark, sparkling midnight blue evening dress
Mary was simply magnificent. For the state dinner, the first since she became queen, she wore a midnight blue evening dress, by Danish designer Jesper Høvring. This is a maxi dress with a sparkling asymmetrical bodice that leaves one shoulder exposed and a satin ruffled straight skirt.
This isn’t Mary’s first time wearing this dress, but she has made modifications for each occasion. So, for example, for the annual New Year’s banquet in 2016, he added velvet inserts, then offered it again last year for his son Christian’s 18th birthday party.
Mary of Denmark, the Pear Pearl tiara
But the real highlight of her look was the precious tiaraknown as Pearl Perrymade in 1825. It was commissioned as a wedding gift by King Frederick William III of Prussia for his daughter, Princess Louise, on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Frederick of the Netherlands.
Mary associated it with antique diamond necklace and earringsoften worn by his mother-in-law, Queen Margaret, so much so that it became a symbol of her 52-year reign.
Her host, Halla Tómasdóttir, responded to such elegance with a golden dressvery pretty but certainly not up to the style of the Sovereign.
